Following 14 years in a brutal prison for a terrible crime, 32-year-old Myagmar lives a solitary life, save for bad memories and the stray dogs he feeds. At night he cruises the streets of Ulaanbaatar observing sleaze and when he finally gets a job, by day he drives a hearse. This is how he begins connecting with people again, a blind coffin-maker, a young Buddhist monk, and Saruul, the coffin maker’s daughter whom he discovers also walks the night…

Winner of the Grand Prix and Best Production Design awards at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2024, Silent City Driver is a tale of outsiders seeking salvation in a bleak world lacking in love. Widescreen visuals capture haunting surreal images with spiritual meaning, the gorgeous vistas of Mongolia’s plains, and its nocturnal cityscapes doused in striking lighting. At its centre, a phantom-like performance by Tuvshinbayar Amartuvshin whose rendition of a Travis Bickle-like figure is captivating in his mystery and smouldering angst.
